European DECT Cordless Phone Market Dips in 2008

London, June 2, 2009. Having shown consistent yearly growth over the past 10 years the European consumer DECT cordless phone market declined in 2008, with both mature Western European markets and emerging Eastern European markets suffering. Total handset shipments fell by 5% to 56.5 million in 2008 with declines in Eastern European territories being stronger than within Western Europe. Sales of professionell multi-cellular DECT cordless phones in Europe grew marginally in 2008 compared to 2007, but the volumes are significantly lower (around 1.4 million handsets in 2008) and failed to outweigh the slump in consumer demand.

Only one year after the official launch of DECT 6.0 at the CES by the DECT Forum, the international association of the wireless communication industry, more than 1 million DECT 6.0 devices have been sold to US customers. DECT 6.0, the interference free wireless communication technology for family homes and small and medium sized enterprises, has become a broadly accepted technology for cordless telephony. The fixed telephony network is migrating to a new generation of IP based networks and services. Therefore DECT is moving to a new generation of value added IP based services. The evolution of the mature and reliable DECT technology (almost worldwide the standard), is a joint approach of DECT Forum and ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute). ETSI will standardize the DECT enhancements as a new DECT profile, the DECT Forum will define the market applications and introduce the new technology including a new brand name and logo.

DECT products from various well-known manufacturers should be available in the US at the end of 2005.
