EC Decision 2025/2425 Paves the Way for DECT NR+ in 3.8–4.2 GHz: Empowering Local, Affordable 5G Innovation Across Europe

Bern, Switzerland, December xx, 2025. The DECT Forum welcomes the European Commission’s Implementing Decision 2025/2425 on the 3.8 – 4.2 GHz band, which significantly strengthens the regulatory framework for ETSI’s DECT-2020 NR (New Radio) in the European Union. This decision marks an important milestone for the deployment of next-generation, userdeployable IMT wireless technologies and reinforces DECT-2020 NR, marketed as DECT NR+ by DECT Forum, as a robust solution for a wide range of applications, including industrial automation, IoT, and wireless audio.

NR+ enabling innovation

NR+ is engineered by ETSI and recognized by the ITU to meet IMT2020 (5G) requirements, delivering ultrareliable, lowlatency communication and supporting massive machinetype connectivity for dense device deployments. The technology enables local area wireless networks that can be deployed by anyone, anywhere, at any time, without complex frequency planning or subscription models, offering advantages for industries that demand scalable and resilient connectivity.

Regulatory support and market momentum

The Commission’s decision harmonizes technical conditions for the use of spectrum relevant to NR+, creating a clear and predictable regulatory environment that supports broader adoption across Europe. DECT Forum commends the EC for acknowledging the unique benefits of NR+, including its capability to operate in both licensed and licenseexempt spectrum below 6 GHz and its builtin interference management mechanisms, which together will help drive innovation and accelerate market growth for NR+ solutions.

DECT Forum’s ongoing commitment

DECT Forum remains fully committed to nurturing the NR+ ecosystem, promoting interoperability, and advancing standards to address evolving industrial and professional requirements. The association will continue to collaborate closely with regulators, manufacturers, and endusers to ensure NR+ delivers reliable, secure, and scalable wireless communications as a cornerstone of Europe’s digital transformation and the European Single Market.

“DECT Forum looks forward to deepening its cooperation with the European Commission and all stakeholders to unlock the full potential of NR+ across sectors such as manufacturing, smart buildings, logistics, smart cities, and wireless audio”, says Christian Schepke, Chairman of the DECT Forum.
