Bern, Switzerland – 24 February 2026 – The DECT Forum announced today the world’s first NR+ interoperability demonstration. It will take place at a DECT Forum event on 10 March, during the Light + Building fair in Frankfurt, Germany. This demonstration marks a major milestone for NR+ (non-cellular 5G) as an open, interoperable wireless connectivity standard for smart buildings.
The demonstration shows NR+ enabling true multi-vendor interoperability, allowing devices from different manufacturers to operate together in the same network while simultaneously supporting dense device deployments and long-range communication. This combination addresses critical requirements for smart buildings at scale, enabling predictable wireless performance everywhere in the building, high scalability and operation in license-free spectrum eliminating dependence on proprietary technologies or vendor-specific silos.
The live network, showing higher data rates and lower end-to-end latency than any other existing IoT system, connects around 80 NR+ devices from members of the NR+ Building Interest Group, including Legrand and Schneider Electric products. It is based on production-grade technologies provided by Nordic Semiconductor and Wirepas.
The demonstration represents a significant step forward for the NR+ Building Interest Group: “With these implementations, NR+ moves from specification to proven interoperability,” says Christian Schepke, chairman of the DECT Forum. “It shows that professional installers can deploy multi-vendor smart building networks at scale, based on an open standard, ready to support their favorite application framework.”
The NR+ Building Interest Group was established in 2024 to promote NR+ as a standardized connectivity foundation for smart buildings. Hosted by the DECT Forum, the group focuses on enabling open ecosystems and supporting long-term, standards-based deployments across building automation, monitoring and control use cases. In addition to the companies contributing to the interoperability demonstration, the NR+ ecosystem includes companies such as Siemens and Last Mile Semiconductor, the latter of which is currently developing a dedicated NR+ system-on-chip.
NR+ is the first non-cellular 5G standard, running in the so called ‘golden’ frequency band 1.9 GHz, purpose-built for massive IoT, combining long range, high density and license-free operation. The DECT Forum continues to advance NR+ through standardization, ecosystem development and real-world validation.
